Have A Seat!!

Sitchyo ass down!!!

It’s been a long time since I have posted anything. Because of this, I’m sure my few regular readers think I have fallen off the face of the earth. But alas…I have not.

I am starting a new weekly posting called “Have A Seat” where I intend to point out the bullshit, hypocrisy and outright lunacy of people, places, or things that grab my attention. These things may be in the news or daily occurrences in my life. That is to say, no one is exempt. Given some of the things I see in the news this could be a long running series.

Now, let’s get started.

Hey y’all!! Paula Deen announced this week she was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes three years ago. Her revelation was met with a firestorm of criticism from many of her fans, diabetic patients, and a fellow celebrity chef, Anthony Bourdain. (If you missed that you can read about it here.)

The timing of her revelation coincides with the announcement of her partnership with diabetes drug maker Novo Nordisk as a paid spokesperson.

So here we have an overweight celebrity chef whose menu and focus is comfort foods laden with butter and sugar telling the world she is diabetic in order to educate you about the disease.

Ms. Dean….HAVE. A. SEAT!!!

Hey y'all!!

Your entire empire is built on recipes that are a diabetic’s kryptonite. No matter how subtlety mentioned “moderation” your fatty sugar-rich recipes, which you state you will continue to promote on your shows, and your paid “partnership” with the drug company casts you in the bright lights of hypocrisy.

Your supporters say that you owe no one an explanation. I disagree.

If you were to be taken seriously and sincerely, you should have made the announcement of your diagnosis years ago, shortly after you learned of it. If you were sincere about your desire to educate others on diabetes, you should have offered healthier alternatives to your recipes in conjunction with emphasizing moderation. And here’s a novel idea…introduce your viewers to healthy tasty recipes that can assist them in AVOIDING diabetes altogether.

And finally, all of this should have been done without you profiting from promoting drugs that only treat and mask diabetic symptoms.

I balked at Anthony Bourdain’s assertion that you were the “worst, dangerous person in America.”

But now I think, he may not be too far off the mark.

  1. As a Southern woman and the mother to not one, but TWO Type 1 Diabetic children, I was disgusted at Ms. Dean’s announcement. I cannot help but think this 3 year wait was because she didn’t want to take a hit to her brand’s bottom line, and only now that she can pair it with an insulin company for even more profit, does she “announce” it. I shake my head at the entire thing.
Apparently, something bad does come from starting a pound of butter.

  2. I don’t see the problem and I can’t figure out for the life of me why this was even news. You know in the bible it states ‘Study to show thy self approved…..’ Meaning don’t just allow someone else to state things and then you just accept them as the fact and examples. This is the problem I have with people in America today. Everyone seems to think that they just have to take what people say on the TV/Media/Internet as fact and then live by it. No one seems to want to use their own powers of reason and do their own research to draw their own conclusion. Paula is over weight by a lot and the fact she is diabetic is no surprise to me.
Look Paula is doing a job which is entertaining people with the use of food. Food that by the way is very tasty, but at the same time not very healthy. People know this and yet they want to blame her for the method in which she provides entertainment. Guess what Paula is not a doctor, nor does she own the network on which her show is aired. She is a talent that is getting a check to sell a product to whomever the audience that watches the show. Personally, I live by the rule of I refuse to eat in the kitchen/ restaurant of a skinny person because I know they are not eating the food they serve. And if they are not eating what they serve they must fundamentally not believe that what they serve is good for you. The Chinese spot behind my house gets my business all day every day because I see the family that works in there eating the same dishes I eat. And many times they will make a single portion of the dish that is enough to fill my order and their plates at the same time. Point being, Paula is not to blame here, she is working a job like you or me.

  3. Money has always trumped people personal interests. She knows that she has a big following and if she revealed the truth, her following would cease. Maybe she could have changed her ingredients to be more health wise. But I guess at the end of the day, her bank account over rules her honesty about diabetes.

Have your say.....
