Nip/Tuck – At What Cost?

surgeryequipment.jpgFirst, I want to extend my deepest sympathy to Kanye West and his family. The death of his mother will be the hardest thing he’ll ever have to face. It is being reported on ABC News that Donda West died due to possible complications after a tummy tuck and breast reduction. This is so sad for several obvious and not so obvious reasons.womanonscale.jpg

While I cannot begin to comment on Ms. West’s state of mind nor her reasons for opting for an elective surgery, I can comment on what I have witnessed as the “quick fix” mentality of society. The increasing popularity of cosmetic surgery is a direct result of our craving for instant gratification. Fewer people are willing to invest the time and effort required to exercise to rid themselves of the weight. We no longer want to sacrifice on the front end to see the results on the back end.

I personally know of two people who have the tummy tuck procedure, one as recently as several months ago. In one case, she is back to the size she was before the procedure and it would not surprise me if the other person will eventually experience the same fate.

hardbody.jpgHow much of this can be attributed to laziness? Low self esteem?

Why is it that we cannot be happy with what God gave us? Why is it that we will not allow ourselves to age gracefully? Every laugh line and wrinkle is a reflection of the lessons learned, wisdom gained and respect earned in this life. They are our badges of honor! Wear them with pride!

Take a queue from India.Arie:

When I look in the mirror the only one there is me
Every freckle on my face is where its supposed to be
And I know my Creator didn’t make no mistakes on me
My feet, my thighs, my lips, my eyes; Im lovin what I see

  1. Sup Chocolatta!!!!

I am loving this site. Good poing about Kanye’s mama. It’s sad all the way around. That’s why I don’t lie about my age-I have earned every year and wrinkle plus, I want my kids to know loving what God gave you is what you are supposed to do.

  2. I have long considered a breast reduction to get relief from the nagging pain in my back and the deep gashes in my shoulders from my bras. My fear of just what happened with Kanye’s mother has kept me from doing so, but I pay the price for it every day. I should own stock in Tylenol I take so much of it! 😦

  3. @blondefaulous…sometimes breast augmentation/reduction is medically necessary. Such as in your case, many physicians recommend it and insurance companies will cover it. Other examples are breast cancer patients who have had a mastectomy, breast reconstruction is a part of the healing process, I think, physically and emotionally.

Not sure if you’re a spiritual person or not, but pray or meditate on it. If you decide to go through with it, I am sure you will come out alright and you’ll have the relief you need and seek! Good luck!!

  4. Nope, I am truly a chicken. I will just grin and go along with what life hands me, and bake cake to sweeten the deal!

  5. My prayers go out to Kanye and his family. Death of a loved one is always hard.
It makes me sad that so many people in today’s society are so dissatisfied with themselves they would go to such lengths to portray an image that society says is acceptable. And at any costs.
if you want to change your body than you should change your eating habits. There are no quick fixes!
Thank you but no thank you, I’ll play the hand that I was dealt!
    Blessings!

  6. as a former competitive bodybuilder and trainer i have seen many men and women lose weight the healthy way. i believe wholeheartedly that losing weight should be a product of exercise and good nutrition and not a needle and some vacuum system. i truly do feel bad for kanye’s family, but the consequences of internal body tampering are too great not to consider an alternative. get in that gym! climb that stair master! rep out on the dummbells! hook up some grilled chicken and seafood. steam some veggies and stay away from that damn soul food!

  7. Preach Brotha Marcus!!! And let the congregation say AMEN!! 🙂

P.S. I still gotta have “some” of my soul food but in moderation! 🙂

Have your say.....
